Cinema, Overseas Chinese, National Identity, National Defense Cinema, Wartime China
Recent Research Interests
My current research primarily focuses on the production of Chinese films by and for overseas Chinese from approximately the 1920s to the 1960s. These Chinese language films outside of mainland China are not only an entertainment for the Chinese immigrants, but also had very important effect on building their national identities. From these films, we can see unsettled national identities of Chinese immigrants. My research interests are in the process of how these films reflected the changing identities of Chinese immigrants and how these films took effect on building their new national identities.
I am also interested in doing research on “National Defense Cinema” made in Chongqing, Wuhan and Hong Kong during the Sino-Japanese War.
